Question: Why would the failure to bring the people to the promised land reduce the effect of יציאת מצרים?

Approach: The main purpose of יציאת מצרים was to show "כי אני ה' בכל הארץ", i.e. for the people to recognise God's existence and ongoing השגחה. Since one of the stated purposes - at least to משה - of יציאת מצרים was to enter the Land, and hence the ultimate purpose wouldn't be realised if the people were to be killed off. The end result, a gradual killing off, seems to be somewhat of a halfway house between the two.
