B’Shalach 5780

Question: Second half of 13:18 and all of 13:19 relate to the nature of the exodus, and would appear to be a better fit for the latter part of chapter 12. Why are they moved to here?

Approach: we need to distinguish between two aspects of יציאת מצרים. The first is the actual leaving the country. That is recounted in chapter 12. The other aspect is the onward journey, detailed here.

Taking arms clearly relates to the onward journey, looking towards what might be in the future.

It also makes sense that the taking of Yosef’s bones appears here as the promise to him had been specifically related to the journey back to ארץ כנען
